Render Alternatives in Europe: Web Services, Workers and Postgres with an EU Angle

One app card running web, worker and release processes, attached to a Postgres database

In short

  • Render is based in San Francisco with one EU region in Frankfurt; free web services spin down after 15 minutes idle and free Postgres expires after 30 days.
  • On Nodion, web and workers are processes of one app built from one image, next to managed PostgreSQL with read replicas, an HA standby and opt-in backups in Frankfurt.
  • Nodion is the only provider in this comparison based in the EU; Northflank is based in the UK, and Fly.io, DigitalOcean and Railway are US companies with EU regions.
  • Moving over takes a pg_dump over Render's external URL and a restore into Nodion; every step is in Migrate from Render.

On Render, three things usually run together: a web service, one or more background workers and a Postgres database. If you want that trio at a provider in Europe, the main options are Nodion, Northflank, Fly.io, DigitalOcean App Platform and Railway. Of these, Nodion is the only provider based in the EU. This comparison checks exactly those three building blocks, as of October 2026.

Render itself is based in San Francisco and has one EU region in Frankfurt. Its managed SQL is Render Postgres, plus Key Value. Free web services spin down after 15 minutes without traffic, and free Postgres databases expire after 30 days. In April 2026 Render restructured its workspace plans: flat monthly fees instead of seat fees, with less included bandwidth on Hobby and Pro.

What matters

  • Workers: does a worker run as a service of its own or as a process of the same app with the same image?
  • Postgres: which backups, replicas and high availability are there, and in which EU region?
  • Company: an EU region puts the data in Europe, but the law depends on the company. More in Why EU hosting matters for SaaS and AI teams.

Release commands and previews

On Render, database migrations run as a pre-deploy command, which Render's docs offer for paid web services, private services and background workers; if it fails, the deploy fails and the most recent successful deploy keeps running (Render docs). Preview environments on Render require a Pro workspace plan or higher (Render docs).

On Nodion every app can have a release command that runs once per deploy before web; if it fails, the previous release stays live (Migrate from Render). Preview environments get their own URL and a fresh, empty database for each attached database (Applications).

1. Nodion

Nodion is a cloud platform by Nodion GmbH in Stuttgart with the EU Central region in Frankfurt. An app builds one image and runs several processes from it: web from the Procfile and workers as processes of the same name, each with its own replicas. A release command you set runs once per deploy before web, and cron jobs run on the same app. For apps from Git, every pull request can get a preview environment with its own URL and a fresh database once you turn previews on.

PostgreSQL also comes with pgvector, next to MySQL, Valkey and ClickHouse. Postgres and MySQL can add read replicas and an HA standby, backups are opt-in per database, and a restore creates a new database.

The same account also holds S3-compatible object storage, a CDN, transactional email over SMTP, managed DNS and uptime checks, all under one contract with an EU company. You conclude a DPA yourself in the dashboard, which also shows the subprocessor list.

Best for: teams that want web, workers and Postgres in one app at an EU company. Comparison: Nodion vs Render.

2. Northflank

Northflank separates services (always running) and jobs (also as cron) and offers addons for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB and Redis, billed per second. European regions are in Frankfurt and the Netherlands. The company is based in London.

3. Fly.io

On Fly.io, web and workers run as Machines. Managed Postgres with automatic backups and high availability with automatic failover is available in Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Fly.io is a US company.

4. DigitalOcean App Platform

DigitalOcean's App Platform knows web services, workers and jobs; managed PostgreSQL sits next to MySQL, Valkey, MongoDB, Kafka and OpenSearch. In the EU, apps run in Amsterdam and Frankfurt. DigitalOcean is based in Colorado, USA.

5. Railway

Railway bills by usage and has one EU region in Amsterdam. PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB are Railway-maintained templates; high availability and backups are turned on per database. Workers run as services of their own.

Moving from Render to Nodion

  • A web service becomes an app with the web process, every background worker another process of the same app.
  • Render Postgres is exported over the external database URL with pg_dump and restored over the Nodion database's public TLS endpoint.
  • The pre-deploy command becomes the release command, a cron job a cron job on the app.
  • Every step with commands: Migrate from Render.

How to choose

  • Web, workers and Postgres in one app: Nodion builds one image and runs every process from it, each with its own replicas.
  • Postgres with read replicas and an HA standby in Frankfurt: Nodion, plus pgvector, MySQL, Valkey and ClickHouse in the same region.
  • Migrations on deploy and previews with their own database: a release command you set for your app, and preview environments for apps from Git once you turn them on.
  • An EU company as your contract partner: Nodion GmbH in Stuttgart, with a DPA in the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Render alternative in Europe?

Nodion, if you want web, workers and Postgres in one app at an EU company, with read replicas and an HA standby in Frankfurt. In this comparison it is the only provider based in the EU.

Does Render have an EU region?

Yes, Frankfurt, Germany. Render itself is based in San Francisco, California.

How do background workers run on Nodion?

As processes of the same app: Nodion builds one image, and a worker runs as a process named after its Procfile type, with its own replicas.

How do I move a Render Postgres database?

Dump it with pg_dump over the external database URL from the database's Info page, then restore it with pg_restore over the public TLS endpoint of the new database.
