Railway Alternatives in Europe: Usage-Billed Apps and Databases with an EU Angle
In short
- Railway is a US company with one EU region, EU West in Amsterdam; its databases are templates with opt-in HA and backups.
- Nodion (Stuttgart) is the only provider in this comparison based in the EU, and it meters apps and databases per second with no plan or seat fees.
- Northflank is based in the UK; Fly.io, Render and Sevalla are US companies that offer EU regions.
- Moving over means a
pg_dumpthrough Railway's TCP proxy and a restore into Nodion; every step is in Migrate from Railway.
Railway is popular because you start containers and databases and pay for what they use. If you want the same model with a company or a region in the EU, the main options are Nodion, Northflank, Fly.io, Render and Sevalla. Of these, Nodion is the only provider based in the EU. This comparison looks at three things: how billing works, which databases are managed, and where the company and the region are. As of October 2026.
Railway itself is a US company (Railway Corporation, San Francisco) with one EU region, EU West in Amsterdam. Its databases are Railway-maintained templates for PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB; high availability and backups are turned on per database.

Region or company
An EU region puts the app and its database in an EU data center. Which law can reach the data depends on the company: a US provider stays subject to US law, even with servers in Frankfurt or Amsterdam. So check the contracting entity, the governing law and the data processing agreement, not only the region. More in Why EU hosting matters for SaaS and AI teams.

1. Nodion
Nodion is a cloud platform by Nodion GmbH in Stuttgart. The EU Central region runs in Frankfurt, and the API and control plane are hosted in Germany. You pay for what runs: apps and databases are metered per second, with no plan or seat fees. Nodion builds your repository with Cloud Native Buildpacks or a Dockerfile; workers run as extra processes of the same app, cron jobs run on the app too, and for apps from Git every pull request can get a preview environment with its own URL and a fresh database once you turn previews on.
Databases are PostgreSQL, pgvector, MySQL, Valkey (as REDIS_URL) and ClickHouse, in the same region as the app. S3-compatible object storage, a CDN, transactional email and managed DNS come with it. You conclude the DPA yourself in the dashboard. If some of your users are outside Europe, the US East, US West and APAC Central regions are available too, in the same project and with the same tools.
Best for: teams that want Railway's usage model with an EU company. Comparison: Nodion vs Railway.

2. Northflank
Northflank offers services, jobs and database addons for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB and Redis, billed per second with no seat fees. In Europe it has Frankfurt and Netherlands regions (Zurich is outside the EU). The company is based in London, so outside the EU.

3. Fly.io
Fly.io bills running machines per second with no monthly platform fee and has four EU regions: Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Stockholm. Managed Postgres with high availability is available in Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Fly.io is a US company.

4. Render
Render has one EU region in Frankfurt, plus Postgres and Key Value. Compute is prorated per second, and since April 2026 a workspace plan with a flat monthly fee replaces seat fees. Render is based in San Francisco.

5. Sevalla
Sevalla, a product of the US company Kinsta Inc., bills running resources per second, with fixed process sizes. New accounts run on Oracle Cloud, with EU locations in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid and Stockholm. Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Redis and Valkey.

What comes with Nodion in the same account
On Nodion all of this sits on the same platform, under one contract with an EU company and on one invoice. So you need fewer separate providers, contracts and subprocessors to check for your data protection records:
- Apps: builds with Cloud Native Buildpacks or a Dockerfile, several processes from one image, cron jobs, a release command for migrations, and preview environments with a fresh database for apps from Git once you turn them on.
- Databases: PostgreSQL, pgvector, MySQL, Valkey and ClickHouse in the same region as the app; Postgres and MySQL with read replicas and an HA standby.
- Storage and delivery: S3-compatible object storage, volumes and a CDN.
- Mail, DNS and monitoring: transactional email over SMTP, managed DNS and uptime checks.
- Operations: dashboard, CLI, REST API and an MCP server that lets coding agents such as Claude Code deploy.
- Data protection: you conclude a DPA yourself in the dashboard, which also shows the subprocessor list.

Moving from Railway to Nodion
- Database: export with
pg_dumpover Railway's public TCP proxy and restore over the Nodion database's public TLS endpoint. - Services: a service with its own code becomes an app, a worker from the same repo another process.
- The pre-deploy command becomes the release command, a cron service a cron job on the app.
- Every step with commands: Migrate from Railway.
How to choose
- Pay for usage, at an EU company: Nodion meters apps and databases per second, with no plan or seat fees.
- Apps, databases, object storage, CDN and email in one account: Nodion, with a DPA you conclude in the dashboard.
- Apps and data in Frankfurt: Nodion's EU Central region; the API and control plane run in Germany.
