Nodion vs Render

Render has grown quickly as a modern PaaS with a clean developer experience. Both platforms aim to simplify cloud hosting, but they differ in where the company is based, which databases are managed for you and which services come built in.

What it costs per month

Always-on prices in USD per month, excl. tax: list prices, or estimates at list rates where a provider bills by usage. For every provider the cheapest plans that meet each minimum, in its cheapest region.

EU Hosting and Data Sovereignty

Nodion is a German company with its headquarters and operations in the EU. For European businesses, this means dealing with an EU entity, EU-governed contracts, and an EU region in Frankfurt next to regions in the US and Asia. Render is a US company that offers a Frankfurt region, but the company itself is subject to US jurisdiction and its terms are governed by California law. For teams where the legal entity behind the platform matters as much as the data center location, this distinction is important.

All-in-One Platform vs Assembly Required

Render offers web services, static sites, background workers, cron jobs, PostgreSQL and Key Value. Render Object Storage is still in early access, so outside the early access program you need an external S3-compatible provider. For transactional emails, you need a third-party service like SendGrid or Postmark, and DNS stays with your domain provider. Nodion provides all of these as integrated, first-party services: applications, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Valkey, S3-compatible object storage, a CDN, transactional emails and managed DNS with GeoDNS, on a single platform with one bill.

Pricing and Billing

Render prorates compute by the second. Its Hobby workspace has no plan fee, while Pro costs $25 and Scale $499 per month, and managed PostgreSQL is billed per instance plus storage. Paid web services start at $7 per month and paid PostgreSQL at $6 per month. On Nodion, there is no plan fee and everything is billed down to the second. The smallest application instance costs 1 EUR per month and a database starts at 1.50 EUR per month, so a small app with a database starts at 2.50 EUR per month. MySQL Support

Render's only managed SQL database is PostgreSQL. If your application requires MySQL, which is common for WordPress, Laravel and many legacy applications, you need to run MySQL yourself on Render or use a third-party database provider. Nodion offers fully managed MySQL alongside PostgreSQL, both on local NVMe storage with optional point-in-time backups.
