Nodion vs Coolify

Coolify is an open-source, self-hosted PaaS alternative to platforms like Heroku, Vercel and Netlify. It lets you deploy applications and databases on your own servers with a clean management UI. Nodion is a fully managed PaaS where the servers, their updates and their monitoring are handled for you. This comparison is about a fundamental choice: operating your own servers versus using a managed platform.

Managed vs Self-Hosted

This is the fundamental difference. With Nodion, you deploy your code and the platform takes care of everything below it: server provisioning, security patches and host monitoring. You scale with a click and turn on backups per database. With Coolify, you install the platform on your own servers. Coolify handles deployments, the reverse proxy and HTTPS certificates, but the servers themselves remain your responsibility: operating system updates, SSH access, firewall rules, DNS, backup and restore, and the security of what you expose.

In a typical single-server setup, Coolify, your applications and your databases share one machine, so that server is a single point of failure. Coolify can deploy to several servers, but redundancy and failover of the servers themselves are your job. On Nodion, the hosts are run and monitored for you, and you can add replicas for apps and databases.

Operational Overhead and Stability

Running Coolify means maintaining servers: installing OS updates (Coolify can list and install them on demand), acting on disk and availability alerts, recovering when a server fails and configuring firewalls. With Nodion, the servers are not your concern, so you do not have to plan time for server administration.

Coolify is actively developed and ships updates often. As with any self-hosted platform, you decide when to update and test new versions against your own setup. Builds also run on your own servers, so plan capacity for them next to the apps that are already running.

Cost Comparison

Coolify itself is free and open source, and Coolify Cloud hosts the control plane from $5 per month. Your main cost is the server infrastructure you run it on, typically a VPS from providers like Hetzner or DigitalOcean. This can be very affordable for small projects, and costs grow as you add redundancy, backups, monitoring and more servers. On Nodion, a small app with a database starts at 2.50 EUR per month, new accounts can earn up to 15 EUR in credit when signing up, and pricing scales with your usage. You trade a higher per-unit cost for no server management, a CDN, transactional email and professional support.

EU and Data Sovereignty

Both options can provide EU data residency. Nodion is a German company under EU law and runs your apps and data in the region you choose, including Frankfurt for the EU. With Coolify, you achieve EU residency by choosing EU-based server providers, and you choose each provider and conclude the data processing agreements with them yourself, including for your backup targets.
